The "Jeen-Yuhs" of artists
“ Y'all think small, I think Biggie ”
This lyric is from Jay-Z’s song Family Feud. What he’s trying to convey is quite simple and understandable but the word ‘biggie’ makes all the difference. The Notorious B.I.G., one of the greatest rappers of all time also goes by the name biggie smalls. He’s sort of broken that and used it in his lyric.
Jay-Z has a notorious (see what I did there?) reputation for playing with his lyrics. There are so many references in his songs. He mentioned in an interview, that he tries to have some sort of structure to his songs either it happens by accident or intention.
“ The 10 and the 2 is the loneliest sight “
Now this lyric is from my favourite artist John Mayer’s song In your Atmosphere. Back then, I would spend a lot of time on songmeanings.com and that’s where I learned about the meaning of this line. You’ll still find it there as one of the top comments. I’m also going to paste it here:
That both of his hands are on the wheel now (@ 10 and 2) whereas when he and the girl were together, they were probably holding hands as he drove.
Imagine the hands of the clock at 10 and 2 and now imagine your hands on the steering wheel. That’s the reference.
For instance, we love a good guitar solo, don’t we? The atmosphere at concerts where people are just having the time of their lives, what is it about music?
I think the point I am trying to make is the thought process that goes behind writing all these lyrics and making these songs. Of course, composers and music producers deserve equal praise.
I truly feel that singers, song-writers, musicians, composers, producers, they are truly blessed. I’m talking about music because I’m not that educated to comment on other forms of art and surely, it’s similar kind of genius at work there too.
It’s not defined as to what makes these artists great. Sometimes, it just comes to them. Sometimes they have to put in the work for months or years.
At the end of the day, it benefits us.
